MAY IS NATIONAL CORRECT POSTURE MONTH, BUT EVERY DAY SHOULD BE PERFECT POSTURE DAY
May is Correct Posture Month, but every day should be Perfect Posture Day. This may remind you of your childhood when you were told to ‘stand up straight.’ However, the purpose of this month is to get people thinking about the importance of posture and how it can affect their health. Poor posture leads to back pain; however, there are other health problems caused by incorrect posture. Slouching when sitting can cause jaw pain and headaches. Poor posture also means there’s increased strain on your muscles and joints, which can lead to arthritis. It may also affect your breathing and take a toll on your circulatory and digestive systems.
The benefits of correct posture, as demonstrated by the man in the picture below, include:
- Less stress on the muscles and ligaments.
- Allows muscles to work more efficiently; therefore, the body uses less energy. This prevents muscles becoming tired.
- Helps to keep bones and joints in the correct alignment, allowing our muscles to work the way they should. This decreases the unusual wearing of the joint surfaces, which can lead to degenerative arthritis and joint pain.
- Helps in reducing back and muscle pain, while also preventing muscle strain and overuse syndrome.
